8 Step Supporter Program
Developing a long-term approach to assisting your loved one and yourself.
Basic information on what’s happening with a loved one living with bipolar and recognizing symptoms of hypo-mania, mania and depression
There are many ways to offer support. They range from active listening to intervention at the right time. A clear, supporting approach is developed.
Acknowledging your challenges and finding support. It is isolating and distressing to see a loved one suffering from bipolar episodes. Developing a self care and support plan.
Listen and discuss your loved one’s experience. Looking at the dangers of treating your loved one like they are incompetent to manage their lives.
Developing a contractual agreement with your loved one that gives you permission to intervene on their behalf when they cannot. The importance of routine.
Learning to be kind in understanding that a person living with bipolar does not choose symptoms of hypo-mania, depression, suicidal idealization and mania.
Addressing access to healthcare professionals treating the loved one and looking at hospital admissions and experiences
A person living with bipolar feels disconnected from themselves and certainly from the wider world. Bipolar, like alcoholism, effects the whole family who need support and understanding
